Onyx Insights

Onyx is a natural stone consisting of banded calcite. It is much more rare than other natural stones and is considered expensive. It is a softer stone so it can scratch rather easily.

Onyx quarries can be found world-wide. Turkey, Iran, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United States are just some of the countries that host onyx quarries.

While it can be used for larger projects such as countertops,  onyx is mostly used in floor tile, carvings and jewelry.

Onyx Restoration

Repair, cleaning, polishing, protection and maintenance.

Onyx Repair

Do you have chipped onyx tiles? Are there cracks in your floor? What about broken onyx tiles? Before you replace your onyx, consider having Beyond Stone Solutions provide expert onyx repair services. Beyond Stone Solutions can fill holes in onyx and fix onyx cracks and chips, blending the repair site with the surrounding area, then honing and polishing it to match the finish on the rest of your onyx floor, countertop or other stone surface.

Deep Cleaning and Sanitizing Onyx

Onyx cleaning processes vary based on the surface condition and type of dirt or oil being removed. Onyx is easier to keep clean with periodic professional deep cleaning services, using non-acidic, highly-effective cleaning solutions. However, once wear sets in, creating hollows and low points where dirt can collect, your onyx can become more difficult to keep clean. Beyond Stone Solutions can assist you in not only cleaning your precious onyx surfaces, but also in keeping your onyx properly polished, maintained, and free of scratches to help make day-to-day cleaning and care of your stone easier.

Onyx Stain Removal

Beyond Stone Solutions can remove stains and discolorations from your onyx surfaces. Whether you are seeking guidance on how to do this yourself (refer to our Stain Management app) or want Beyond Stone Solutions to treat your onyx, the original finish of your stone can be restored.

Onyx Tile Replacement

Although it is rare for an onyx tile to be beyond repair, sometimes tile replacement is necessary. Beyond Stone Solutions’ craftsman can, in many cases, remove your affected tile without damaging neighboring tiles, install the new tile, level the newly installed tile with the surrounding area, and then match the finish as closely as possible. Unless you have an extra tile from the original lot to install, replacement tiles will likely be noticeably different. Even if you purchase the same tile by name from the same quarry, the quarry line has shifted and with that so has the color. Have no fear, our professional technicians have the knowledge, experience, and skills to get your onyx looking sharp again.

Onyx Refinishing

Are your onyx surfaces too dull or too shiny? Let Beyond Stone Solutions know the finish you desire. We can alter the finish to a honed or polished one. If you have a new floor with some tiles that look more glossy than others – let Beyond Stone Solutions even out the finish for you. Whether you have or are seeking to acquire a gloss, semi-gloss or matte finish, Beyond Stone Solutions can deliver a beautifully restored finish for all your onyx surfaces.

Onyx Honing

Do your onyx surfaces have dull areas associated with wear patterns, scratches, etches or spots? Beyond Stone Solutions can hone your onyx surfaces to eliminate these imperfections, resulting in a stunning onyx surface free of damage. With our onyx honing services, our expert technicians can achieve a honed or soft matte finish that is warm, inviting, and velvety smooth.

Onyx Polishing

An uneven finish, dull spots or etches can diminish the elegant appearance of your onyx surfaces. Beyond Stone Solutions can polish your onyx using the appropriate polishing pad or  powders to restore the finish you want, whether matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish. With our onyx polishing services, our expert technicians can achieve a beautiful, glass-like polish.

Lippage Removal / Grinding

Are your tiles uneven? Beyond Stone Solutions can grind away the excess stone (a process called lippage removal) to create a flat, level surface using state-of-the art diamond grinding technology. Once ground to the level and shape desired, the onyx is honed and polished to the finish you want.

Sealing & Protecting

Onyx needs extra protection to inhibit stains and protect from etching. We can treat your marble with premium quality solutions…

Impregnating Sealers

Some natural stone types are more porous than others, and the more porous a natural stone is, the more susceptible it is to staining. Your onyx will be easier to keep clean with periodic professional deep cleaning services, using non-acidic, highly-effective cleaning solutions. Once your onyx is cleaned and restored, we may recommend you have us seal it to enhance its stain resistance. We say, “may” because not all stone needs to be sealed. Highly polished stone may not even take an impregnating sealer. But, if sealing is recommended, know that sealing represents an inexpensive, preventative measure against stain damage, because it buys you time to wipe up spills before they become stains.

Anti-Etch Treatments for Countertops, Bar Tops, and Tables

We offer options to protect your onyx tops from etching. Onyx is acid sensitive….When your onyx is protected from stains and etching, you don’t have to worry about choosing onyx for your bar tops, vanity tops or where acid etching is a concern.  (Learn more about our anti-etch treatments.)

Does Onyx Require Maintenance?

The short answer is yes, onyx does require maintenance.  Regular cleaning with a stone safe cleaner is a great for simple day-to-day maintenance, but over time, floors can develop grout lines that just won’t come clean, shiny scratches, and increasingly obvious traffic patterns. Countertops, bar tops, and tables can become scratched, dull and etched.

As these problems develop, you become more and more dissatisfied with the appearance of the floors or other surfaces until it’s time for another round of professional restoration. Ask about our regularly scheduled maintenance program which keeps your onyx looking great all the time, without the need for periodic restoration.
